چکیده

Proactive computing reinforces the need for non-command interfaces that fulfill the user’s intentions without explicit commands. Eye gaze is a natural modality to be used in this connection, because it is also used proactively in everyday life. Previously eye-tracking has been used mostly for research purposes or in applications targeted for users with special needs. We present iDict, a gaze-assisted application for reading electronic documents written in a foreign language. iDict observes the reader’s eye movements and behaves proactively by providing help when the user has comprehension problems. The lessons learnt (coping with inaccurate input data, need to control the level of proactivity, and delicacy of proactive adaptation) are of interest to the development of proactive applications in general and to eye-aware applications in particular.

Proactive Information Retrieval by User Modeling from Eye Tracking

In this position paper we review the results of the the eye-tracking -related part of the PRIMA project (Proactive Information Retrieval by Adaptive Models of User’s Attention and Interests), carried out during 2003–2005. The project focused on how to construct and combine user models from implicit or explicit feedback signals. If proper user models can be constructed, it will be possible to bu...

Top-down control of saccades as part of a generalized model of proactive

23 Lo et al. (2009) describe a recurrent network model of inhibitory control of saccadic 24 eye movements based on neurophysiological observations in the Frontal Eye Field (FEF) and 25 Superior Colliculus (SC) of rhesus monkeys. This model emphasizes the proactive, inhibition26 based, tonic neuronal activity that prevents the eye from moving in a countermanding 27 paradigm. In this review I dis...

Top-down control of saccades as part of a generalized model of proactive inhibitory control.

Lo and colleagues have recently described a recurrent network model of inhibitory control of saccadic eye movements based on neurophysiological observations in the frontal eye field (FEF) and superior colliculus (SC) of rhesus monkeys. This model emphasizes the proactive, inhibition-based, tonic neuronal activity that prevents the eye from moving in a countermanding paradigm. In this review I d...

Monkey gaze behaviour during action observation and its relationship to mirror neuron activity.

Mirror neurons (MNs) of the monkey ventral premotor cortex (area F5) are a class of cells that match the visual descriptions of others' actions with correspondent motor representations in the observer's brain. Several human studies suggest that one's own motor representations activated during action observation play a role in directing proactive eye movements to the site of the upcoming hand-ta...

Relevance Feedback from Eye Movements for Proactive Information Retrieval

We study whether it is possible to infer from eye movements measured during reading what is relevant for the user in an information retrieval task. Inference is made using hidden Markov and discriminative hidden Markov models. The result of this feasibility study is that prediction of relevance is possible to a certain extent, and models benefit from taking into account the time series nature o...
